Roof replacement cost in Texas
A typical asphalt shingle replacement on a 1,500 to 2,500 sq ft home in Texas runs about:
$11,200 to $17,500
That is about 4% above the national baseline of $10,800 to $16,800 for the same home (state index 1.04).
Texas roof replacement cost by material and home size
Published sources disagree on Texas. One by-state survey puts it below the national average, while Dallas-area cost guides support a figure slightly above it. We use the higher figure.
| Home size | Asphalt shingle | Metal | Flat roof (TPO or EPDM) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1,500 sq ft | $8,000 to $12,400 | $16,800 to $27,400 | $9,700 to $19,400 |
| 1,500 to 2,500 sq ft | $11,200 to $17,500 | $23,700 to $38,700 | $13,700 to $27,500 |
| 2,500 to 3,500 sq ft | $15,400 to $24,000 | $32,600 to $53,200 | $18,900 to $37,800 |
| Over 3,500 sq ft | $20,600 to $32,000 | $43,500 to $70,900 | $25,200 to $50,300 |
Per roofing square installed in Texas: asphalt shingle $468 to $728; metal $988 to $1,612; flat roof (TPO or EPDM) $572 to $1,144.
What moves the price in Texas
Sales tax depends on how your contract is written.
The Texas Comptroller counts re-roofing a house as repair or renovation work, and labor to repair, remodel or restore a home is not taxable. Under a lump-sum contract (one price for the whole job), the roofer pays tax on materials when buying them and does not charge you tax. Under a separated contract (materials and labor priced separately), the roofer collects state sales tax of 6.25 percent, plus any local tax, on the materials charge but not on labor. When you compare quotes, check which kind each one is.

Coastal roof replacements need a windstorm inspection.
In the 14 coastal counties and parts of Harris County east of Highway 146 that the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) lists as a designated catastrophe area, most homes need a windstorm certificate of compliance (WPI-8) to be insured by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA). TDI says most roof replacements need an inspection and that certificate, and that you or your builder should notify TDI on Form WPI-1 before work starts. TDI says its inspectors charge no fee but must see the work while it is under way. If a roof is replaced without an inspection, an appointed engineer has to inspect it afterward, which TDI says may cost more. TDI advises asking your contractor how they will meet the inspection requirement.

Texas law requires you to pay your insurance deductible.
If you have a property insurance policy, Texas law requires you to pay the deductible on a claim. A seller whose work will be paid from your claim commits a Class B misdemeanor by paying, waiving or absorbing your deductible, or by giving a rebate or credit that offsets it, without your insurer's consent. A contract of $1,000 or more that is expected to be paid wholly or partly from a claim must carry a notice about this in bold 12-point type. With a replacement cost policy, the insurer may refuse to pay withheld recoverable depreciation or a replacement cost holdback until it has reasonable proof that you paid the deductible.

Impact-resistant roofing may earn an insurance discount.
TDI says roofing that passes an impact test is classified Class 1 to 4, may be eligible for an insurance discount, and that a Class 4 roof covering would receive the highest premium credit. Each insurer sets its own discount for each class, the test criteria it accepts and the paperwork it needs from you and your roofer. For a TWIA credit, the roofing must be classified under UL Standard 2218, carry the manufacturer's labeling, and come with TDI Form PC068, which the roofer completes after installation. Ask your insurer what it requires before you choose a product.

How these Texas figures are worked out
We start from the national typical price per roofing square for each material, multiply it by the squares on a typical roof for each home size, then apply the Texas index of 1.04 from our state-by-state source data. The ranges assume: full replacement with a single-layer tear-off, sound decking, average pitch (4/12 to 7/12), standard permits, and architectural shingle as the default.
A steep roof, extra layers to tear off, or rotten decking push the price up. Your exact price comes from the roofer who inspects your roof. Sources and method
